No, She Doesn’t Understand

Updated Below
So, yeah, I’m alive. I’ve discovered that when I’m really busy and will most likely be interrupted that Twitter is the best place for me right now. I really haven’t had a reason to write more than 140 characters in a while- nor the time to be honest.

At any rate, I saw Tuesday’s presidential debate. I was only watching in hopes that McCain would lose his mind and throw a chair or something. I’m glad that the two of them were forced to go beyond their talking points for once.

I was fired up by two things John McCain said. One of which he repeated throughout the debate. His assertion that Sarah Palin knows “better than most” what it’s like to raise a special needs child had me cursing the television. How the hell does she know the struggles and challenges of raising a special needs child? Where the fuck does he get off making the claim that she knows better than most American families who live with these challenges every day?

Anyway, Vince has an excellent post up about this very issue. He and his wife knows what it’s like. Moreso than uber-rich Palin with her excellent health care and troop of aides and other children. Go read that. Here’s my comment:

“I was thinking the SAME thing. Well, except I don’t have the challenges that you and Mrs. Rocker Guy face wrt my children. But how dare he– or SHE for that matter– put out there that somehow she knows better than most anyone else the struggle that families with special needs children face (autism as well as others). Bullshit.

She doesn’t have to worry about child care. She doesn’t have to worry about paying for therapy. She doesn’t have to worry about the cost of medical care. She doesn’t have to worry about who is going to take care of her child if something terrible happens to her. BULLSHIT. She will never, ever know the challenges normal, everyday people face with their special needs children.

What’s even more laughable is that McCain plans to pay for his health rebate tax thing by, get this, cutting medicaid and medicare. The two things that struggling families often depend on to care for these children- who will eventually turn into adults.

My sister manages a group home for special needs adults that rage from profoundly retarded to Downs Syndrome. The higher function adults in this group home came because their primary care givers either became too ill or poor to care for them or because the caregivers died. What about them, McCain? What’s going to happen to them when you cut funding for Medicaid? BULLSHIT.

And, one more thing while I’m on a flippin’ role, how can you agree to disagree on this issue? Sarah Palin is in no place where she can understand the struggles of everyday people- much less the families of special needs children/adults. To say that she knows “better than most” was condescending and offensive even to me. How can you agree to disagree with that? No matter which way your vote is cast, making light of this subject in such a way was beyond the pale.”

The other thing that pissed me off was his air quotes are “health” when he was discussing the health of the mother. He asserted that he wouldn’t use a litmus test in appointing SCOTUS judges, but his condescension for the “health of the mother” clauses proves that he is indeed a bold-faced liar. Of course, this is from the same man that thought a “Gorilla Raping Woman” joke was oh-so hilarious. He’s also someone who is opposed to funding for birth control. Damned women shouldn’t be having sex anyway. Beh.

In the spirit of that, I leave you with this video. It is safe for work and older kids:

I was raped. And then I got pregnant.
Sarah Palin believes that the Government should be able to force me to carry the pregnancy to term.

Sarah Palin believes that the Government should make that choice, not me.

Governor Palin, I didn’t have a choice about being raped. But I should have a choice about this.

I just read on CNN that the McCain campaign is denying that they plan on cutting Medicaid/Medicare. And in fact they’ve changed their webpage. However the Wall Street Journal reported Oct. 10 that McCain would institute cuts to these programs to pay for his tax relief proposal.

John McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs.

The Republican presidential nominee has said little about the proposed cuts, but they are needed to keep his health-care plan “budget neutral,” as he has promised. The McCain campaign hasn’t given a specific figure for the cuts, but didn’t dispute the analysts’ estimate.

[…]But Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Sen. McCain’s senior policy adviser, said Sunday that the campaign has always planned to fund the tax credits, in part, with savings from Medicare and Medicaid. Those government health-care programs serve seniors, poor families and the disabled. Medicare spending for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30 is estimated at $457.5 billion.

Once again McCain switches his position because his poll numbers suck ass. Or whatever reason. Maybe his magic 8-ball gave a different answer this time. Either way, I’ll be glad to see him retire to his ranch in Arizona.

The Netroots Got it Wrong

I saw a quote today that made my eyes bleed.

You know the Day the Blogosphere Died? It was when it decided to defend NBC’s sexism and misogyny in order to score points against Hillary Clinton. There was a time when the Netroots agreed with me that we needed Fighting Dems, that Obama was not measuring up on that score. But the Obama Cult has taken over in its entirety. . . The Netroots are dead.

The Netroots are dead because not everyone is getting behind Hillary? Let’s not forget that Senator Clinton not only supported the fiasco in Iraq, but also refuses to acknowledge the right of gay/lesbian couples to marry1. She recklessly held out voting against more money to Iraq until she was sure which side was going to win (Obama did it, too) and has consistently shown herself to be part of everything that’s wrong with Washington. But, because she’s a woman, she’s losing only because of her breasts? Liberals are against her because she is the worse of the two. She is undependable and untrustworthy. Will she end the war? Not if it’s not in her best interests. Will she back equality for all? No, because it’s distasteful for her to openly stand for everyone’s right to be legally married. Will she really do anything about the current health care crisis? Give me a break. She’s had years to work on that, but for the last 7 years she’s handed money to King George to do with what he wanted.

No, in my opinion, the Netroots ended when Kucinich was chucked under the bus because he was “unelectable”. Kucinich, though monkey-ugly, stood up for his principles and never floundered to looke “electable”. He wanted what was best for the citizenry as a whole, not just the oil-controlling corporations. If the Netroots really, truly wanted change in this country, they certainly missed their opportunity. Sure, they wanted to prove that they love Blacks and women. So, they chose between Clinton and Obama: Kucinich obviously being a white male didn’t fit good enough for them. But they ignore the history of the two minorities running. It doesn’t matter the skin color or the gender of the candidate. It matters where they stand on the issues. I was under the impression, at one time, that the Netroots stood for equality and an end to this “war”.

I, obviously, was wrong.

Now, the group is separating and pairing off against each other to see which side is the most “tolerant”. That’s fine. Except both sides are backing the same person in different clothing. They missed their chance with this one. At least a chance to be taken seriously by those of use who really care about the issues. We’re at a point where we have to chose between two stink laden candidates, or defect to the other side. Or, of course, just write in Dennis, who won’t accept if he were to win because he’s following the flippin’ policies of the P.O.S. party. Gah!

How strong is my dislike for Hillary Clinton? If she wins the nomination, there is no way I’m voting for her. I don’t care who the other side picks. I look at Sen. Clinton as just another cog in the wheel that’s taking this country straight down the toilet. I can’t wait to have a woman president, but she’s not the woman I want representing me. If she’d have honestly stuck by her words and shown herself to be truthful, I might be singing a different tune. But she’s a liar. Not because of her womanhood, but because of her history of siding with The King. She’s no better, in my eyes, than any of the other Blue Dog Dems- which aren’t any better than the Bush Republicans.

I might, though, be persuaded to vote Obama. If Mickey Mouse isn’t available for the job.
