Internal Wal-Mart memo leaked

There is so much that I want to say about this
article in the NYT that, but I don’t know where to start.

Walmart’s Chief executive of low wages and no benefits, H. Lee Scott Jr., sent a scathing memo to one of his managers after being asked by said manager why “the largest company on the planet cannot offer some type of medical retirement benefits?” This, to me, is obvious. Mr.Scott makes a cool $17 mil and lives in a gated community. And according to this article he hops around the world in a fleet of company owned jets (good thing those poor clerks have to option of buying stock via payroll deduction or Mr.Scott may have to use a commercial airline-Ouch!). But he is angry that that one of his minions dared suggest that the company lose profits by giving decent benefits, even to it’s management team.

“Quite honestly, this environment isn’t for everyone. There are people who would say, ‘I’m sorry, but you should take the risk and take billions of dollars out of earnings and put this in retiree health benefits and let’s see what happens to the company.’ If you feel that way, then you as a manager should look for a company where you can do those kinds of things.

So if you don’t like getting shitty benefits then you should go to a company that offers the opposite. Doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me. If the company isn’t going to make any sacrifices for you then you shouldn’t make any sacrifices for it. Period. But Wal-Mart counts on the same thing the Bush administration counts on- blind loyalty. Keep your mouth shut and go with the flow and maybe someday you’ll get a decent wage.

According to the article Mr.Scott hails Wal-Mart’s response to Katrina. What they don’t tell you is that after responding so valiantly to that disaster Wal-Mart cut employee hours across the board in an effort to make up those losses.[1] While they want the general public to see them doing great things for the community they still want ot keep their profit margin and so the average employee loses. And by losing hours these same employees lose their eligibility to Wal-Mart’s shitty health insurance (if they’re lucky enough to be able afford it). Wow, that’s certainly commendable.

None of this surprising to me. When I first started there they stressed anti-union sentiments because a union couldn’t possibly offer more than Wal-Mart offers in the way of wages and benefits. It was common knowledge that if you mentioned “union” then they would find a reason to terminate you. They also strongly suggested that the employees didn’t need higher education because they could make a career out of working for the company. This particular Wal-Mart didn’t like to work with college students with regards to scheduling. If you were too educated then you didn’t go far with Wal-Mart (mostly because you’d quit but they don’t want their employees to be too smart). And if that sounds like bigotry to you, that’s too bad, Wal-Mart doesn’t want it’s employees to know that they’re getting screwed.

I have another interesting story. When I first started there they would give raises once a year based on performance and a percentage of your current hourly wage- up to 5%. This was good if you were there for a long time and made $10 or $11 an hour. This system seemed to reward performance as well as loyalty. Not long before I quit, though, they changed that system. And would only give raises up to 25¢ an hour (based on performance). So, if someone was there for a long time and made that $10 an hour they could potentially get 25¢ instead of 50¢ an hour. They tried to make this sound beneficial to the employees, and most of them bought into it. I remember sitting in the break room and arguing with old timers about how they were getting screwed. “Someone comes in an makes starts at $6 and pretty soon gets these quarter raises, but you only get 5¢(ranging from 0-25¢)then soon enough this new guy makes more money than you and you’ve been here for 10 years.” But they’d take that to the managers and the managers would make them feel better. That was that. See what I mean by them liking the not-so-educated? I left soon after that. I couldn’t stomach that place anymore.

So, here are the PDF links to the confidential emails. I’m going to try to copy them all and put them here, but my PC is gods-awful slow and it could take me five years. If you’re curious you’d be better off looking them up yourself.

Senator May Seek Tougher Law on Leaks

Senator May Seek Tougher Law on Leaks(free reg.required)

Ok, they were convinced not to investigate the president’s illegal spying on American citizens. Then they decided to make a law that would make it legal to spy on us- apparently it’s going to be retroactive so his highness doesn’t get anymore flak for being a criminal. Now this. If you tell the world that your president is a criminal- because you know first hand- well that makes you a criminal.

“I’ve often said a leak is not a leak in Washington until somebody gets wet, but we’re all in the swimming pool,” (Sen.Pat) Roberts (R-Kansas)said. Recalling the legislation Clinton vetoed, Roberts said, “Whether it’s a reporter or just any individual or somebody by the water cooler who’s upset or somebody who has just a very strong difference of opinion knowingly reveals classified information, that would be a felony.”

So now the president and his cronies are drowning in a swimming pool (a big ol’ vat of bullshit, if you ask me) and now the Senate must save him. What a better way to do that than to make bringing his illegal to light illegal unto itself.

A lawyer familiar with the AIPAC case said administration officials “want this case as a precedent so they can have it in their arsenal” and added: “This as a weapon that can be turned against the media.”

Absolutely. We don’t want anyone reporting on Abu Gharab, Gitmo, or things like the president committing crimes. We don’t want to worry the minds of those little Bush-bots who are sitting on the fence wondering if their loyaltys are in the right place (Bush v. the Constitution, which do you pick?). We certainly don’t want to give those pesky lefty bloggers anymore fuel for their fire. They’d shut the fuck up if the media only reported good things about the administration (because this has obviously been proved true).

But wait! If it’s illegal to release classified information and they want to broaden that scope, where does it leave our Dick? He seems to think it’s ok for him to leak classified information whenever he wants (especially if it’s to penalize an American agent because her husband exercises his free speech). Wouldn’t be at all possible to get him caught up in that net too? Probably not. His evilness probably is exempt from every part of every criminal code in the U.S. And if he’s not, well, he’ll make sure the law states “Except for Vice President Dick Cheney because he may need to punish someone who doesn’t like him.”

Over at the NY Times(free reg.req)there’s a great editorial about how Sen.Pat Roberts is Bush’s nanny, always keeping him safe and warm. It also addresses Sen.Roberts attempt to criminalize whistle-blowing at the federal level. But the best part is the last…

The last thing the nation needs is to amend the law to institutionalize the imperial powers Mr. Bush seized after 9/11.

Amen! It’s too bad they’re already working over time to do just that.

Zack Space taking on Ney

Space files petitions for Congressional Seat

New Philadelphia -— Dover Law Director Zack Space filed his petitions today, seeking the democrat nomination for Congress in Ohio’s 18th Congressional District. Republican Bob Ney, who is at the center of a bribery scandal involving indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, currently holds the seat.
In citing his reasons for running, Space stated, “the needs of the people of this region are simply not being met by our current Congress. Manufacturing jobs continue to be off-shored, our schools are deteriorating, and far too many Ohioans go without basic, fundamental health care. Meanwhile, our current Congress is embroiled in controversy, seemingly more concerned about personal enrichment than in enriching their constituents.” The 18th District covers 16 counties spread out over a vast area of east central and southeast Ohio.

Mr.Space is from my hometown and I’m happy that he’s challenging Ney. He’s a good guy and has a great family (his wife is a juvenile court judge). We need someone fresh (and without corruption) in Congress. Space is a progressive who actually knows what’s happening in his district. He’s not so far left as to alienate moderate Ohioans, but isn’t a Repub-in-disguise either. He hasn’t been getting wined and dined on a golf course in Scotland while Ohioans have been sinking further and further into economic hardship.

With Zack Space running, Bob Ney won’t be handed his seat back on a silver platter. He’ll have to work for it. Luckily for us his record shows exactly who Bob Ney works for while in Washington. And it’s not our best interests.

I was feeling quite down trodden for a while. But this is good news for me. I can get back in and try to help my country and my state get their dignity back. I’m feeling much better about Ohio Democrats right now.(Ok, yeah, I got over my tantrum.)

Now we just need to clean out Columbus and things could start looking up around here.

Forgive me for not being more eloquent today (I can be sometimes) but I’m getting distracted and want to get this posted.

Rush chimes in on Hackett withdrawl

This is too funny. According to Media Matters, Limbaugh says there’s “a racial component” to Paul Hackett leaving the race. Really?

Maybe somebody in the party has figured this out. And don’t forget, Sherrod Brown is black. There’s a racial component here, too. And now, the newspaper that I’m reading all this from is The New York Times, and they, of course, don’t mention that. But — you know, “Democratic leaders say that Representative Sherrod Brown, a seven-term incumbent from Avon, has a far better chance of toppling Senator DeWine than does the — Hackett.”

Ha! What an idiot! See what happens when you stop taking those pills, Rush? Suddenly everybody with the name “Sherrod”/”Brown” is black. Guess that’s what happens when bigots make assumptions. Here’s what Media Matters had to say about that.

After accusing the New York Times of neglecting to report that “Sherrod Brown is black,” Limbaugh was later informed of his error. He said: “Sherrod Brown’s a white guy? Then, I’m confusing him with somebody. … Must be somebody in New York [who] has got a similar name.” Limbaugh may have been referring to Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), who is also Caucasian.

Ah, I love it when the Bush-bots make complete fools of themselves. Don’t worry, though, Good ol’ Boy Rush ain’t apologizing to anyone.

I erred when I said that Sherrod Brown is black. I’m confusing him with somebody with a similar name in the Democratic Party somewhere. But we have — we have corrected this, and I, you know, I’m not gonna apologize, ’cause I don’t think it’s an insult to be black. But — but I did err. He is — his is — he is — he is not black. He’s one of these white European descendents in Ohio.

“One of these white European descendents”? What the hell does that mean? (By the way, I’m not offended– I’m laughing way too hard). This right after he was about to insinuate that either Paul Hackett was a racist or the Democratic Party was trying to push a white guy out of the primary (c’mon, you know where he was going with that). Is Rush Limbaugh suddenly trying to become PC? Give me a break.

Does anyone even take him seriously anymore? I can just imagine what his “fans” were thinking “Goddamned affirmative action gave us a free-bee”.

Please go see for yourself. It’s hilarious!
