The conviction of Mychal Ball, one of the Jena Six, has been overturned.
JENA, Louisiana: A black teen’s conviction in a racial beating case has been overturned by an appeals court in Louisiana, which said the boy should not have been tried as an adult.
Mychal Bell was one of five black teens originally charged with attempted second-degree murder in the beating of a white student amid racial tensions that began with a noose placed in a tree on their high school campus.
The charges brought widespread criticism that blacks were being treated more harshly than whites. The case drew international attention, and one by one the charges against the teens have been reduced.
This is great news! Now if Jena wants to pursue charges against the boys they’ll have to charge them all as juveniles and start all over again. This time they’d have the eyes of the world watching what happened. No doubt the same circus wouldn’t be tolerated.
