I was happily browsing looking for some stuff to write about and what did I see? Why this:
I’m sorry I was born with a penis to a middle class family. If I could have chosen I would have chosen to suffer as a poor woman.
What the fuck? Now that’s what I call P.C. And that’s the kind of shit that pisses me off.
I understand that we live in a patriarchy and that men, especially not-poor white men, are entitled or some shit. I do get that. But good freakin’ gods, that’s beyond pale.
I should explain that I saw this quote on a site devoted to feminism. It seems that to participate in the comments of said site a man must denounce his very being. It’s not enough that he “gets it” or that he is interested in women’s issues. But he must tell the world that he is SO SORRY for the circumstances of his creation. Otherwise they are called misogynists just because of the penis they somehow managed to attach to themselves.
This is not the only apology I came across on this site. I saw a couple more, though not so blatant. Out of context it looks sarcastic, I realize, but trust me, folks, this man was actually sorry that he was born a man and would rather have been a poor, hungry, and possibly homeless minority woman. And somehow by virtue of his very birth he is guilty of all atrocities ever committed by white men (and especially Christian white men). Bullshit.
I think that kind of attitude is just as sexist as the shit they’re fighting against. Yes, white Christian men have the power in this country (and arguably this world) and they have made a history of oppressing anyone not exactly like them. However, merely assuming a man is misogynist at birth does a disservice to both feminism and the men that appreciate the movement. You cannot cry foul and take the victim role when your energy is spent extracting revenge from every person with a dick. That’s wrong and ugly.
I honestly cannot imagine any man that I know and respect every apologizing to me because he was born the way he was. Apologizing for something he couldn’t control if he had tried. That’s ridiculous. And if I asked for an apology from any man that I know and respect- and apology for the fact of his BIRTH – I would deserve to be shunned and mocked. It’s one thing to disparage a man because of his actual attitude toward women, it’s quite another to expect him to grovel because, well, he’s a MAN.
People say that they’re fed up with P.C. when someone gets offended that “gay= lame”. That is not P.C. This guy apologizing for his penis is. That these women demand that apology is. And it’s fucking asinine.
