Will she or won’t she?

Here’s just one more surprise. Bush told his ex-staffers to just ignore Congressional subpoenas. Who cares about subpoenas anyway? Certainly not anyone in offices above the law.

WASHINGTON – The Bush administration is urging a former White House political director to ignore a subpoena and not testify before Congress about the firings of federal prosecutors, her lawyer says.

The Senate Judiciary Committee wants to hear from Sara Taylor at its hearing Wednesday and she is willing to talk. Testifying, however, would defy the wishes of the president, “a person whom she admires and for whom she has worked tirelessly for years,” lawyer W. Neil Eggleston said.

And, of course, she doesn’t want to go against his wishes, he being all kinds of good and respectable. Why exactly do people that have worked for this man always say the same kinds of things about him? Is it because he had their homes wired and has the goods on them? Because I cannot believe from what I’ve seen of his treatment of our Constitution that this man has much good in him at all. I see him as someone who calls his secretary by the wrong name every single time he looks at her- because she’s just not important enough to get to know.

“In our view, it is unfair to Ms. Taylor that this constitutional struggle might be played out with her as the object of an unseemly tug of war,” Eggleston wrote.

He added, “Absent the direction from the White House, Ms. Taylor would testify without hesitation before the Senate Judiciary Committee. She has committed no wrongdoing. She will assert no personal privileges.”

So, unless the King or Prince tell her directly, we can expect to hear testimony from Ms. Taylor. Ha! I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you. “Absent the direction” was her out. Should Bush put the pressure on her, and no doubt he will, she will use that one phrase as a reason she just couldn’t testify. Of course, she won’t be singing that song, her lawyer will, but George will be playing the tune. And loving it.

I keep waiting, hoping, that this new Congress will somehow hold that man’s feet to the fire and rein in his grab for more and more power. But so far they’ve just been… campaining. They’ve got to make money, spend money, tell everyone what a jerk that other guy is, fend off the news about whatever they did in the past, make more money, and… rest. They don’t have time to really pay attention to the guys behind the curtain. Or maybe they’re secretly hoping he’ll be allowed a lot more power and then when it comes to be one of their turn they too can be all powerful.

And we’ll have ceded from England for nothing.

I’m sure someone will take the King to task and show him that, contrary to what Cheney whispered in his ear, he is not above the law. Right?

Lawmakers have given the White House until Monday to explain why the White House claimed executive privilege on subpoenaed documents related to the congressional investigation. Lawmakers also want an accounting of documents being withheld.

Monday, huh? Hmm, well, I’m sure something will most certainly happen, but what could it be? Oh, yes. Bush telling Congress again that he just doesn’t have to comply with their laws. Sorry, guys, but you don’t have any oversight of the Oval Office. You’re just out of luck with this one. Really, what are they going to do?

“We’re going to pursue our legal remedies to press forward with the subpoenas. I don’t think, if this is correct, we don’t have any other choice,” said Democratic Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Ha! Yes, a lot of chest thumping and feather ruffling. Same old shit they hollered before November 2006. We’re still waiting for those investigations into FISA and illegal wiretapping, as well as that missing money we paid to Halliburton. What are we going to hear tomorrow?
