TheMan’s paternal grandmother is in from Arizona and she’s pretty old. This is important, so try to remember. Anyway, MIL had her over for dinner and the rest of us had to come along. Usually I don’t mind talking to older folks because they have interesting tales to tell. However, this time I was just annoyed.
You see Kent State had an opening for an accountant. And Granny’s daughter applied for the position. And the entire family was appalled because the aunt didn’t get so much as an interview.
Me: Does she have a degree?
Granny: Why does she need a degree? She’s got experience.
Me: Well, is she at least certified (meaning by the state)?
Granny: Look, she applied to be an accountant. She doesn’t need a degree or certificate or anything else. She ran her own business.[1]
Me: That’s all well and good, Granny, but the fact is that she expected to get an interview at a university without a degree. That’s just crazy.
Granny: Why? She’s experienced. They could’ve at least talked to her.
Me: Yeah, that makes sense. Instead of interviewing qualified graduates from their own accounting program they should interview someone without so much as a state certification. I so completely understand where you’re coming from. I mean, really, a state university not hiring someone because *gasp* they don’t have a degree is just absurd.
Granny: Well, it doesn’t make sense.
Me: Of course not. Why would it?
It was funny to me because she and her daughter were just amazed that a university, that supplies degrees in such things as accounting, wouldn’t interview the daughter because she wasn’t qualified. And it amazed me that they just couldn’t understand that the degree holder gets first shot- especially if they graduated from that school. I did a lot of sighing and eye rolling during their conversation. Imagine not being able to get an accounting job without having a degree! The nerve! Someone needs to call someone else and lodge some kind of complaint.
I’d like to add that prior to this Granny bragged that, even though she’s not longer in the job pool, she reads the jobs/economy section of the paper every day. She informed us all that she keeps up on these things and knows what employment prospects will be for TheMan and I (though she doesn’t read Ohio papers). Guess she missed the part that said that college graduates make, on the average, around $17000 more a year than those holding just high school diplomas. Guess she also missed the part that even college graduates are having a hard time finding a job in this state, but that white collar employers require a degree to even get in the door. Must’ve been a day she was out with the girls.
Anyway, it was a lesson in the age gap. I’m sure I’ll use the things I experience right now to influence my thinking in 50 years, because we all know that nothing really changes in 50 years. Bwahahahahahaha!
