Now that it’s getting closer to warm-weather-time, our on-the-ball government gives our poor the gift of super heating savings!
It took months to get the additional money for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program through Congress, in part because of resistance from fiscal conservatives opposed to new spending and from lawmakers from warm weather states who contend that the program favors cold weather regions.
Holy cow! I didn’t know it snows in Florida/Texas/Arizona! Those poor people must be knee deep in heating bills and freezing their chi-chi’s off. How unfair for cold-weather states to expect a little extra for the poor people facing heat shut off! Honestly though, what are these morons thinking? You’ve got old folks up here wearing 7 sweaters and 5 pairs of pants (at one time) to stave off the cold, and they’re worried that they don’t get as much money for states where snow doesn’t even fall? That’s ok, because we’ve reached a compromise.
Under a compromise worked out in the Senate, half of the new money would be distributed according to an existing formula that would favor warm weather states while the other half would be spent at the discretion of the president.
Isn’t that lovely? Half the money goes to warm weather states and the rest goes to a monkey that can’t pick his nose without Karl Rove’s input. And we all know he’ll do right by the people in, say, Buffalo, NY, who are really cold right now. Or in Michigan- knee deep in the white stuff and having problems keeping their house warm. I’m sure he’ll bless the blue states with heat. Yipee! We’re all saved! It’s a good thing spring is here (almost).
Of course, a better plan would have been to put a cap on how far heating bills can be raised. But then that’d make the gas companies mad and we don’t want that. Better to let the masses freeze than to piss off big contributors. Afterall, they don’t have to pay their own gas bills so why worry about ours?
Just to make a point- right now in my area it’s 28 degrees and snowing.
Just in time for Spring!
