“Electable Democrats”

Since Paul Hackett was on “The Daily Show” I’ve been seeing more of the “he wasn’t electable” crap going around. “He doesn’t have an legislative experience…He can’t go from private citizen to Senator…He’s not “electable” Blah, flipping blah. I know that he’s out now and there’s nothing I can do about it, but whine and yet I still seem to get fired up when I hear this nonsense.

The worst part is that he wasn’t a good candidate for Senate because he didn’t have experience. So what? Why exactly is that a bad thing? There are plenty of Democrats in Washington right now with tons of experience. Guess what? They suck donkey balls. Sure they have name recognition and the backing of the party big dollars, but what have they done? Hoped that the Republicans would just get rid of themselves? How many golden opportunities are they going to waste before they actually start acting tough? Oh wait, I forgot, our current crop can’t get tough. They don’t want to make the Republican machine angry…ooooo…cause they might seem like they actually care about something.

I thought we wanted fresh blood in Washington. I thought we wanted people that weren’t tainted by the Beltway. Apparently, I was wrong. The only fresh faces that a lot of Dems want to see should go straight to the House- unless someone with more experience wants the job. The Senate is reserved for the “good ol’ boys”. I’m sure re-electing Dems that don’t do anything now will make everything so much better in November. Sure. Nothing like staying the course even when everything seems to be working against you. Don’t go rocking the party boat because they do such a good job the way it is right now.

I really love the mantra “vote for the guy/gal with the (D-) beside his/her name no matter what“. Here’s something that may shock you. But there are a lot of centrists that just want to vote for the person with the most integrity, strength, and *gasp* honor. They’re looking for someone a little less shady than the average Republican and a lot less pansy-assed than the average Dem. They want someone that’s going to stand by his/her word. They want someone that won’t back down, who won’t “go along to get along”. And they don’t care what party that person is representing. Wouldn’t it be better to have a Dem with those kind of characteristics? Even if he/she has never served any kind of office? Apparently not.

Average-voter Joe is looking for someone as much like him as possible. He’s the kind of guy that doesn’t care how eccentric his neighbor is, as long as his neighbor respects him. If that neighbor decides to come over into A-V Joe’s yard and piss on his favorite rose bush, Joe isn’t going to let that slide. He’s going to do something about it. He wants someone in D.C. that would be the same way if, say, the Bushbots pissed on the Constitution. So what happens if Average-voter Joe doesn’t have the choice to vote for someone who’s not going to take the shit? Move? No, A-V Joe is going to pick someone that espouses other values closest to Joe’s heart. Like, say, “the right to bear arms”. A-V Joe in this part of the world believes in that because he likes to go out a kill things. A-V Joe will vote Republican on that one single issue. Don’t believe me? Wait ’til November.

How about getting someone in Washington that doesn’t suffer from Fraidy Cat Syndrome? How do you know he/she wouldn’t be “electable”?

P.S.
Can we take the “Democrat” out of “Progressive Democrats” and just start a whole new party? I’m not libertarian enough for the Libertarians and I’d make the Greens vomit with my not-so green living and it’s obvious how I feel about both the Repubs and Dems right now. Is it possible? Can we? Pretty please?
