It seems that some in the blogosphere are shocked that Snowe and Hagel would cave and vote against investigating the president’s illegal activities.
The fact that Hagel and Snowe are sponsoring the legislation with Mike “The President Can Do Whatever The Hell He Wants” DeWeine proves once again that there are no “moderate” Republicans, there are none who have the best interest of America at heart.[1]
Why are you so outraged and disappointed? Why would you believe, after everything that’s happened, that any Washington Republicans would go against dear Leader? And there is no such thing as a “moderate” in Washington. Let me break it down.
Moderate Republicans= Republicans who challenge their boss but only for the cameras.
And
Moderate Democrats= Republicans who challenge their boss but only for the cameras (and call themselves Dems so they can pick up votes in blue states).
Please try to refrain from putting your hopes in anyone that claims to be “moderate”. They really just call themselves that to coddle the public. They have absolutely no intention of ever doing anything that might endanger their standing in Washington.[2] There’s no need to be upset. We all knew this was going to happen. There are no true heros in Washington anymore.
Even our friend Glenn Greenwald was pissed about the vote yesterday. But he was a lot more positive about everything (than I could be right now).
Democrats will have a hard time agreeing on some broad policy programs and alternative vision to sell to the electorate by November. But they don’t need to have that. Americans are tired of Republican rule and have abandoned the President. Restoring some balance back to our government and ending the increasingly corrupt, unchecked one-party rule of our country will be, in my view, more than enough for Democrats to at least take over the House. By itself, that will ensure that the landscape shifts dramatically and that the Administration will be called to account for their multiple acts of law-breaking “ or, as George Bush is fond of saying in another context, it will ensure that “they are brought to justice.”
I really wish that were true. But, you see, I don’t believe the poll numbers. I don’t believe that those numbers are actually representative of the American public as a whole. These polls were conducted either by telephone or mail so who was answering? Not most people that I know personally. Because those people don’t open “junk mail” and have caller id as to avoid telemarketing calls. The people that answer those calls or return those forms are politics junkies like me and anyone taking the time to read this blog. Those aren’t the majority of Americans by any means.
This past week I’ve been doing a lot of blog surfing via BlogMad and have learned that there are a helluva lot of blog readers that can’t stand politic blogs[3]. This was as shocking to me as when I found out my sister had no idea there was any kind of scandal happening (except that Dick Cheney shot his friend in the face [4]). I am an absolute mess over the state of this country, but there are more people that only have a passing interest in what’s going on. And those are the ones that didn’t answer the phone when the pollsters called. That’s why I don’t believe those numbers and why I think it’s a huge mistake to put too much stake in them.
The politicians know this. They know when to pay attention to the numbers and when they really don’t matter. They listen only to the constituents that call or write (with paper and pen) their offices and then only if people are calling/writing in droves. An internet petition probably just gets deleted the minute it goes into the inbox. They care when the cameras are rolling. When the regular, offline world goes back to regular scheduled programming then we, the blogosphere, are a mere blip on the radar.
[1] I try to avoid this site because I hate the comments section, but I like Georgia, so”¦ [2] Or giving the leader a reason to make good on his threats. [3] I couldn’t believe it either. [4] She only goes to hunter forums and crap like that.
