“We have concluded that it is not [science], and moreover that ID cannot uncouple itself from its creationist, and thus religious, antecedents,” Jones writes in his 139-page opinion posted on the court’s Web site. (Opinion, pdf)
“To be sure, Darwin’s theory of evolution is imperfect. However, the fact that a scientific theory cannot yet render an explanation on every point should not be used as a pretext to thrust an untestable alternative hypothesis grounded in religion into the science classroom or to misrepresent well-established scientific propositions,” Jones writes.
This is awesome. But I think that he’s in for a fight. I can see the RR licking their chops right now. Just another attack on Christianity:hmph. Of course, respecting the beliefs of all Americans just doesn’t sit well with them. So they’ll be gearing up for a fight. Just like they’re fighting Wal-Mart and Target for allowing their employees to say “Happy Holidays” instead of that other thing. We cannot have this persecution continuing!
I personally believe in some sort of intelligent design. It’s part of my religion and therefore part of me. Do I think that they should teach this to children in science class? No. Should I demand that the story of Isis giving birth to the earth be taught as fact in schools. No. I’ll teach my children what I want them to know (or at least let them know what I believe) at home and let the school teach the science side of it.
I say bravo! Keep church and state separate. Let the children be taught religion at home. If the neo-cons want their children to learn that the earth was created in 7 days then they should put them in Christian schools. There are plenty around. And if they don’t like the schools that are available? They should just open their own. Don’t shove that crap down my kids’ throats.
